Before I leave you, I want you to have a solid plan of attack for how you are going to manage technology in your life. So that is what we are going to do today! Get ready for your steps:
It's almost farewell. Mindful Digital Native Our days together are coming to an end. It is sad, but it is also really cool because we have been on this journey together for so long and we made progress! So today you have the task of tracking your screen time again. See how it changed.
For me, I know I have been spending a lot more time online and on my phone lately because that's just what happens when I go back to school. And if you end up tracking more screen time than you started with, that is totally alright. It may feel like you did all this for nothing, but that is not at all true. You learned a bunch of techniques to use to keep working on your habits. You also learned what techniques you like and don't like. I always like to say, "Anything you did that helped you collect valid, useful data is not a waste of time." You did an amazing thing starting this process, and I miss you already. The Mindful Digital Native So I was procrastinating doing my homework the other day by watching videos about how to not procrastinate on my homework. I came across this article that was talking about something from an Anthony Bourdain book. It discussed mise-en-place, or how cooks stations should be clean because what is at their station is a reflection of what is in their mind. I feel like this is a good way to look at making changes in life.
This calendar is focused on digital wellness. And you are probably like "What does mise-en-place have to do with technology and my screen time." Well. Let me tell you. Our phones distract us from doing things that we want to be doing, or should be doing. I literally started this blog post explaining how I was doing exactly that. So take this opportunity to put your phone and laptop and tablet and smart watch in a drawer. And you are going to organize something. It could be one side of you cupboard. It could be a jewelry box. It could be you entire room. Just DO. And don’t look for organization inspo online before hand. While it can be good to get ideas, it more often than not just keeps you from doing things because you feel like you don’t have the materials or the time. Or when you do get things to a functional place, you feel like it's not good enough because it's not a e s t h e t I c . SO GO CLEAN SOMETHING. ANYTHING. And at the same time clear your mind. Phone naked, The Mindful Digital Native It can be bard to get away from tech. Especially when you have nothing to do. So today is going to be game night! Get together with some friends and find an analog game to play! Below are some of my favorites:
You may have heard of something called humane tech. It's a concept created by the Center for Humane Technology. Basically it is technology designed to support humans instead of distract and profit off of your attention through advertising. It also has a goal of making our relationship with technology more meaningful. Below I will be linking more resources to help you discover more about humane technology. Check them out below, you!
It's learning time It’s hard to stay off your phone. It really is. It haunts you like an electronic ghost. Beckoning you into its domain. Never to return. Dun dun dunnnnnn *scary organ music*. Ever since I began my digital wellness journey, I’ve had little reminders to help me not use my phone. One of them was having a fun phone wallpaper that says something like “put the phone down”. There are tons of ways to make one! You can draw something on paper and take a picture, use PowerPoint or Canva or MS Paint to make your creation. Have fun!
As I stated in a previous post, social media makes us focus a lot on ourselves, and keeps us in a little bubble a lot of the time. That is why I wanted you to find a biography yesterday.
I got the idea for this day from my dad. He says biographies allow us to go beyond ourselves and understand the views, struggles, and perspectives of others. This in turn allows us to reshape and adapt our own world view. We are taking a moment to step outside ourselves. Reading a biography or autobiography also gives you a chance to learn from the mistakes and trials of others. We don't always have to do everything alone, and it's good to read about someone who has had similar or related life experiences. Especially in the digital age, when we are more connected, but more alone than ever. I always enjoyed reading biographies because they allow me to really get into other people's heads and understand how they think. It's easy to get caught in an echo chamber through the internet, so reading something that challenges your perspective is critical. So even if you couldn’t go to the library, hop on the internet and research someone who inspires or challenges you. Happy reading, The Mindful Digital Native I am in the library every day for upwards of six hours. I’m studying engineering in college, so it kind of makes sense that I live there. But I think when I leave I probably won’t go to the library as much, which is sad.
Libraries are great resources and great places to find analog activities. They usually have events and clubs, which are especially great for younger digital natives. So if you have a library near by, turn your phone off and go on an adventure! Look through some books or check out what events are going on. And the main goal today which will help you with tomorrow: to check out a biography. I know there are some people who don’t have access to libraries, for one reason or another. And the best place to go for that is Google Books, which has tons of free scans of all kinds of books. Another thing I like to do is go on Youtube and find free audio books (there is a guy who did every SINGLE Lord of the Rings book.) Though these are digital resources, they are a great way to use technology in a balanced way.
