Last summer, while teaching a group of kids robotics, I had the opportunity to give a presentation about having a healthy relationship with technology (which will be linked below). And in the presentation I went over a variety of things, but the one aspect that really resonated with the students was my “Privacy Investigation” activity.
A lot of the time, we use apps and services for “free” without truly understanding the cost to us. That cost is usually personal data that gets bought and sold. While we may not have total control over how this data is handled yet, we can see, generally, what data is being collected on us, and what kind of ads we are getting targeted with. Doing this activity in the classroom allowed students to have a frank conversation about what social media, behind all the sharing and pretty photos, is really made for: advertising. I highly suggest everyone go look through the privacy settings on all their social media platforms to see what you are actually allowing the company to see (location data was one that I disabled because I didn’t know it was automatically enabled!) So without further ado, here is what you have to do! These instructions were made specifically for Instagram. If you want to investigate your other profiles or learn more about social media ad targeting, check out the links in the “Resources” section.
